LINGERIE THROUGHOUT HISTORY: FROM 1900 UNTIL SOFT PARIS

Nowadays lingerie is considered a powerful weapon of seduction, especially if we think of Soft Paris’ one. Since 1900 a lot of things changed and lingerie was associated to the most diverse words: comfort, morphology and lastly… sexy!

1900: the slimmer the better… what a torture!

Women’s beauty standards match the hourglass shape, that’s why corsets are so popular. They keep your back straight, highlight your hips and flatten your belly. Their push-up effect enhances your breasts, which at the time was the main symbol of femininity.

1910: Let’s get to work!

Breasts break free: corsets are no longer in fashion. When WWI started, men were called to combat so women were the only ones left working. Therefore, due to practical reasons, skirts and corsets bowed out.

1920: À la garçonne

The roaring 20s mark the beginning of the “Garçonne” trend: small breasts, masculine and slender silhouette and narrow hips. The bra finally dethrones the corset and eventually becomes a band thought to hyde breasts as much as possible.

1930: Comfort and esthetics

The corset, outdated and definitely suffocating, slowly evolves into a spanx and the Warner brothers invent different cups’ sizes - from A to E - and elastic straps. Lingerie becomes more comfortable and discreet.

1940: Wartime

After a 10-years’ research, nylon finally appears. Revolutionising mainly the bra, it radically changes all the lingerie universe. It arrives exactly at the right time - during WWII - it’s effective (unique, bright, solid, dries fastly and never stretches out) and cheap.

1950: Time to be sexy!

The Pin-Up trend entails the curves’ comeback. Balconnet bras and guêpières enhance curves giving even more importance to the sensual aspect of the lingerie. Generous breasts, narrow waist and wide hips become the new image of beauty.

1960: Bye bye lingerie, hello comfort!

Holdups step back into the shadows, with the miniskirt arrival, now it’s collant time. In the 60s colors, and original patterns are the ones under the spotlight.

1970: Freedom, the things I do for you!

May 1968: sexual revolution, feminism and the awareness of our bodies have a significant role in the ongoing evolution of lingerie. Parallel to the burning bras, though, the hippie trend marks the lace revival. Women, an eternal paradox!

1980: The legendary 80s

Holdups and suspenders big comeback: hooked up to corsets and guêpières, they become a strong symbol of femininity, erotism and seduction. In men’s eyes, suspenders are not only objects of erotic fantasies, more of fetish. Sensuality is discussed without any taboo or limit: the centerpieces being thongs and holdups.

1990: Push-up’s counterattack!
